Who?

And the semester have ended, it all worked out quite well in the end. I’m still quite a lot disappointed at the institution for the way that they handled the project, I might even write a mail to the prefect. Anyway, semester ended and I now have total vacation for a whopping two days.

I’m not writing to you from a, for me, new operating system. Two days ago I plugged one of my old raptor disks to the laptop over USB and copied out everything I wanted to keep (a whole great pile of junk as well). After that I popped in the Windows 7 beta 1 disc that I had downloaded just before from Microsoft. My first impression was positive, it felt more responsive than Vista and I think the new taskbar might be quite nice once you get used to it. Overall a good impression, until I tried to take it with me into the kitchen. It turns out, that when I remove the power cable something weird happens. If I open a dialog (the start menu for example) or one is already open, the screen goes all funky. It looks like it goes into 4 bit colour depth or something, totally unusable at least.

So after that lovely colour switching which I was unable to fix, I installed windows 2008 instead and it’s working nice. I have not tried to activate it yet though, so can’t give a final answer. I got a legal copy from school, but I can only install it once and I think I’ll keep it for my next workstation reinstall. Anyway, windows 2008 is much like 2003 when it comes to the feel, it has the Vista layout of things though, like the weird control panel and stuff. The way you manage server roles and features also changed a bit, works nicely at least.

Today I also started to watch a new show called “Samantha Who?”. So far I have watched 8 episodes and it’s quite entertaining and nice. It’s about this girl, Samantha, who wakes up from a 8 day coma with amnesia. She remembers all normal stuff like how to read etc. but she’s forgotten everything about herself, family, friends, boy friend and so on. She also seems to have forgot various everyday tasks, like cooking and riding a bike. Either way, it leads to quite a lot of funny and usually awkward situations. Check it out.

Unpractical sleepiness

Last night, I could not sleep (much like now). I think I in total got about 2½-4 hours sleep that night. So today I was very tired in school and I was very tired when I got home. Got up around 8 by the way.

When I got home today, I talked with my parents a bit, had something to eat and then checked up on the Internet (feeds, comics, irc etc.). After that I started coding java, for some (stupid) reason I decided to rest for a short while. Normally, this means I sleep for 3 hours, Today I had however set the clock and I only slept for at most 30 minutes.

Now I’m sitting here writing a blag post in the middle of the night, cause guess what, I can’t sleep. Tomorrow I’m supposed to get up at 8 as well, so I got about 5 hours 20 minutes of tonight left. I know that writing a blag post hardly helps, but just laying awake in the bed is just too damn boring.

This is a very common situation for me, happens regularly. So my question is, why is it super easy to fall asleep during the afternoon. I have no problem with it what so ever, even if I’m not tired I can usually sleep a bit in the middle of the day. But, when I’m supposed to sleep, at evening or night, I have the hardest time ever falling asleep, even if I was tired during the day and evening.

This is seriously annoying. I know people say you should have a regular sleeping pattern and all that, but even so, why am I never tired at the correct moment ?

(Dunno if I already written this once another night.)

Disorganized

It has been a while since I wrote last, and quite frankly, I haven’t had the time to write. Tomorrow (Wednesday) a project in school is to be handed in. Normally, this isn’t much of a fuzz, cause I normally do things quite in time and are done with them well before deadline. This time, this has not quite been the case, it’s however not due to my laziness.

This project started the 19:th of December last year. A 2 hours long lecture about the project with the most incompetent teacher we got at school. He’s by the way also the guy responsible for the project. As the project description was attached to the course we had before it, me and my group had already started so we were well ahead when we were supposed to start. At this very first lecture he also informed that all the different teachers and assistants that we could require aid from should be in school when we had guidance on the schedule.

The first scheduled time was the 22:nd, the only teacher there was the incompetent one, and we had already done the parts were we could have used his help, so it was quite useless. Most of the question was about the implementation part, and about that he don’t know much.

We sent of a mail to the assistant that was supposed to help us with the programming about DAO, Observable Pattern and some other very interesting stuff.

Then it was time for Christmas. During Christmas we, as expected, didn’t really do all that much.

The second of January it was time for guidance again. Nobody from the group really wanted to go, but we went anyway as we thought it might be helpful. When we got there, we learned that the only person at the school was the incompetent teacher, that we still did not need any help from.

We had gotten a reply on the email about the coding though so we started implementing the system. Our group has been quite calm throughout the period, not getting stressed up and so. Many other groups though have not been very calm at all. As the instructions we got with the assignment are very vague, people assumed that we were supposed to implement the full system. The incompetent teacher had however said at the first lecture that only a small portion was needed to pass the assignment. Later he said to some groups that to be sure to pass, you probably wanted to do a bit more.

Everyone was still very unclear about what was needed on the different parts. Last Thursday the prefect of the institution published a message calling to a meeting about the situation the day after. She and the teacher who is responsible for the whole semester was present. The guy responsible for the whole semester is also the programming and system development teacher.

At this meeting, we asked him several questions and he gave us several answers that directly contradicted our instructions. Apparently, the incompetent guy had changed the instructions cause he thought it was funny or something, nobody knows why. Either way, we had been told to do things that we were not meant to do according to the plan the institution had made for the semester. We also found out that the information we had gotten from the programming assistant about how to implement the system was wrong. Many groups had done pretty much everything wrong in one way or another.

As it was not the student faults for this craziness, the prefect and the semester responsible teacher set up some new ground rules about what was allowed and how much needed to be implemented. Since this meeting on Friday, I have redone quite a lot of our system, not because I had to, but because I want to learn to do it in the correct way for later when I’m perhaps to work with it. Yesterday (Monday) in school before going home after a lecture, I helped 5 different groups with their project, and I replied to numerous messages on the internal communications board about it. In general, many don’t really have a clue what their doing and there have not been enough guidance to help them.

Yesterday I also went up to ask the incompetent guy some final questions so I at least was a bit more sure about what we needed to have ready for the presentation tomorrow. While waiting for him to be free an other teacher that’s suppose to grade the SQL part of the project showed up (his room is across the hall). So I took the chance to ask him exactly what he wanted from us. And, not surprisingly, he only wanted about 1/4 of what was listed in our assignment description from incompetent guy.

When I finally got to talk with him, I found out that the more I talked, the less I was to do. When I asked about specific things, some weren’t very important but just to check that we understood the part. And for some other things he thought it was too much to do this and that so it didn’t really matter much. He still didn’t give any clear answer to exactly what was needed though.

To sum it up, there’s been some major faults in the organization of this project, and some even larger faults when it comes to communication between the people responsible for it.

At the moment, I hate school.

A whole new one

And 2008 has ended, it is now a whole new year and a whole lot of new adventures ahead. But first, let’s have a look at 2008.

2008 was probably a quite good year, nothing catastrophically bad happened at least. Nothing good really happened either though, it just flowed along. My memory is somewhat failing me as I get old, but had a semester of mainly crap and then a semester of a bit less crap. During the summer I worked, which was quite nice, but not very much free time. There, as usual, came a lot of crap at the end of the year though. Christmas and New Year, never liked them and will most likely never like them, perhaps when (if) I get kids.

Christmas was rather uneventful this year, which suits me fine. Food got eaten, presents got unwrapped. Not as many presents as usual though as us kids wasn’t buying stuff for each other and each others partners. On Christmas day some more food was eaten.

New year, as stated previously I do not like parties all that much, and new year is the super duper mega wonder party day. I didn’t do much, ate some nice food, fired of my 2 fireworks, stayed up way too long watching Merlin and then went to sleep. It’s okay with me, but I do wish I would actually like them parties and have such I nice time I hear other people have. Does not seem to happen though so I’ll stick with doing it modestly.

So, a whole new year. Many people seem to think that a new year is a new start, but in fact, this one just continues where the last one ended. Just cause it’s a new pretty number in our calendar doesn’t mean that anything is different. I don’t say that things can’t be different, but the 17:th of March is as good a break point as new years day is. No new year resolution for me at least.

This coming year is one filled with uncertainties. The first one is if I should try to work alongside my studies or not. I got an offer from a professor at school which sounded somewhat interesting and I might accept if it works out with studies. Secondly there’s my dissertation that I’m supposed to write the second half of the semester. I of course have got no clue whatsoever about what to write about. After that, which would be sometime in beginning of June, I’m done with my education. Then I’m supposed to either work for real, or work for the summer if I decide to study the masters. I have no idea if I want to study the masters or not, and I got no clue at all where I would like to work. For now, I guess I take it as it comes.

Happy new leap second, we now got 34 of them!

A reply

Got a mail from plextor the other day stating that my drive could not be fixed somehow, that they couldn’t disclose the offset for the 820 drive and claiming that it did not matter if it was original plextor design or a rebrand is both had their unique firmware. This leaves me at having no idea at all what drive to buy. I’m considering trying to find an old plextor drive on ebay as I only need the CD reading capability really.

Otherwise, suggestions are welcome from my few readers…
